WHC-035 — THE SEA SERPENT OF MADISON'S LAKES

Long before Madison's modern skyline surrounded Lakes Mendota and Monona, people were already telling stories about something enormous moving beneath their waters.

During the late nineteenth century, boaters reported seeing a long, serpent-like creature rising from the lakes. Some described an animal nearly twenty feet long with a broad, flat-topped head. Others watched an unexplained shape cut through the water, leaving a powerful wake behind it.

In 1892, several sightings around Lake Monona brought renewed attention to the legend. Witnesses claimed the creature surfaced near their boats before disappearing into the depths. Whether they encountered an unusually large fish, a wave distorted by fading light, or something still unidentified, their accounts became part of Madison's folklore.

WHC-035 captures the moment two nineteenth-century boaters come face-to-face with the legendary serpent. Surrounded by turbulent water, storm-lit clouds, and the historic Madison shoreline, the creature rises as a reminder that even Wisconsin's most familiar lakes can hold stories beneath their surface.
