WHC-033 — MANITOWOC'S FRESHWATER SUBMARINES

During World War II, an extraordinary sight appeared along the Manitowoc River. Far from any ocean, Wisconsin shipbuilders were constructing submarines for the United States Navy.

The Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company produced 28 submarines during the war. Thousands of workers transformed steel, machinery, and determination into vessels designed for service beneath the sea. Once completed, the submarines were launched into freshwater and tested on Lake Michigan before beginning their remarkable journey through inland waterways toward the Gulf of Mexico.

WHC-033 honors the Wisconsin workers who proved that ocean-going submarines could be built in the heart of the Great Lakes. Their skill turned an inland shipyard into an essential part of America's wartime effort and created one of the most unexpected chapters in Wisconsin maritime history.
