WHC-032 — AMERICA'S FIRST KINDERGARTEN

In 1856, inside a modest home in Watertown, Wisconsin, a quiet experiment began that would help transform American education.

Margarethe Meyer Schurz gathered her three-year-old daughter, Agatha, and four young cousins around her. Instead of asking them to sit silently and memorize lessons, she introduced them to songs, games, nature, movement, and simple objects they could arrange with their own hands.

Schurz had learned these ideas from the educational movement created by Friedrich Froebel in Germany. She believed young children learned best through guided play, imagination, and discovery.

As more families became interested, the small German-language class moved into a separate building in Watertown. It became the first kindergarten established in the United States.

This original artwork captures the beginning of that remarkable story: one teacher, five children, and a simple wooden table covered with blocks, beads, folded paper, and the first seeds of a new approach to childhood education.

What began quietly in Wisconsin would eventually become a familiar part of schools across America.
