The Miracle That Proved Jesus Has Power Over Death

Lazarus of Bethany was a close friend of Jesus, along with his sisters Martha and Mary. When Lazarus became seriously ill, word was sent asking Jesus to come quickly. Yet Jesus intentionally delayed His journey. By the time He arrived in Bethany, Lazarus had been dead for four days and placed inside a rock-hewn tomb.

The grief surrounding the village was overwhelming.

Martha met Jesus and declared that if He had arrived sooner, her brother would still be alive. Jesus answered with words that have comforted believers for centuries:

“I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he live.”

Standing before the sealed tomb, Jesus instructed those present to roll away the heavy stone. Despite concerns that Lazarus’ body had already begun to decay, they obeyed His command.

Jesus looked toward heaven and prayed to His Father before calling out with a loud voice:

“Lazarus, come forth!”

Immediately, Lazarus emerged from the tomb, still wrapped in the burial cloths placed around him four days earlier. Jesus then instructed those nearby to remove the grave clothes and let him go free.

The miracle astonished everyone who witnessed it. Many who saw Lazarus walk out of the tomb believed that Jesus truly was the promised Messiah. Others carried news of the miracle throughout Judea, making it one of the defining moments leading toward Christ’s crucifixion only days later.
