The Iron Brigade
During the American Civil War, thousands of men left Wisconsin farms, towns, and communities to answer a call to service.
Among them was a group of regiments that would become known as the Iron Brigade.
Originally composed largely of soldiers from Wisconsin, the brigade quickly gained a reputation for discipline, determination, and courage under fire.
Their distinctive black Hardee hats made them recognizable on the battlefield.
Their actions made them legendary.
The Iron Brigade fought in some of the war's most significant battles, including Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg.
At Gettysburg, they played a critical role during the opening stages of the battle, helping delay Confederate forces and buying valuable time for Union troops to organize their defenses.
The cost was tremendous.
Casualties were often severe.
Yet the brigade repeatedly returned to the battlefield.
Military commanders and historians alike recognized the extraordinary sacrifices made by these soldiers.
Their willingness to endure hardship and danger earned them the nickname that would follow them throughout history.
The Iron Brigade.
The story of the Iron Brigade is ultimately a story about ordinary people who faced extraordinary circumstances.
Farmers.
Laborers.
Tradesmen.
Neighbors.
Citizens.
Men who left their homes and communities to serve a cause larger than themselves.
Their courage became part of Wisconsin's identity.
Their sacrifice became part of Wisconsin's heritage.
And their legacy continues to remind future generations of the cost of service and the value of perseverance.
