The First State: Delaware Leads The Way

Every nation has a beginning.

For the United States, that beginning can be traced to a small state along the Atlantic coast known as Delaware.

When most people think about American history, they often think of larger states such as Virginia, Pennsylvania, or Massachusetts. Yet it was Delaware that stepped forward first when the young nation faced one of its most important decisions.

In 1787, the American colonies had won their independence, but the future remained uncertain. The new nation needed a stronger framework to unite the states and provide stability for generations to come.

The answer was the United States Constitution.

Before the Constitution could become law, it had to be approved by the states.

On December 7, 1787, Delaware became the first state to ratify the Constitution.

That single decision helped set the foundation for everything that followed.

Because Delaware acted first, it earned a title that remains with it today:

The First State.

Beyond its place in political history, Delaware also played an important role in early commerce. Its rivers, coastline, and strategic location helped connect the growing nation through trade and transportation.
