Ohio — The Heart of It All!
Share
Few states have contributed more to the growth and development of the United States than Ohio.
Admitted to the Union in 1803 as the 17th state, Ohio quickly became known as the gateway between America's eastern settlements and the expanding western frontier.
Its fertile farmland, extensive river systems, and growing transportation networks helped transform the young nation.
During the early nineteenth century, thousands of pioneers traveled through Ohio in search of new opportunities farther west.
The construction of canals, followed by railroads, connected communities and opened new markets for agriculture, manufacturing, and commerce.
Ohio soon became one of America's leading industrial states.
Its factories produced steel, automobiles, machinery, and countless products that helped fuel the nation's economic growth for generations.
Ohio has also earned another remarkable distinction.
It is often called the "Mother of Presidents."
Seven U.S. Presidents were born in Ohio:
- Ulysses S. Grant
- Rutherford B. Hayes
- James A. Garfield
- Benjamin Harrison
- William McKinley
- William Howard Taft
- Warren G. Harding
No other state except Virginia has produced more Presidents.
Innovation has always been part of Ohio's story.
The state was home to Thomas Edison, one of America's greatest inventors, and to the Wright brothers, whose work in Dayton led to the first successful powered flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
From aviation to industry, Ohio helped shape the modern world.
Today, Ohio remains a center of manufacturing, research, education, professional sports, and innovation while preserving the rich history that helped build the United States.
Its bustling cities, quiet farming communities, historic landmarks, and world-class museums continue reflecting the hardworking spirit that has defined the Buckeye State for more than two centuries.
The American Heritage Collection proudly honors Ohio as a state whose leadership, innovation, and determination continue inspiring generations of Americans.
